Resin Bolt Performance – 20 Years Later

Bolt pull testing conducted on a DMM Eco bolt at Brean Down, Bristol (UK).

I placed this bolt approximately 19 years ago so it was an interesting opportunity to complete a full extraction and see how a bolt glued in with methyl acrylate style resin (Hilti C50) would perform on a coastal crag, well after installation.

At the same time as testing the Eco bolt, Portland style staples were also pulled to failure and the loads did not pass the EN959 specification (the more ‘generous’) of the two test criteria. Final extraction loads close to but below 15kN.
